Some of Colorado's largest fish can be found in the White River near Meeker.

Anglers consistently report snagging fish up to 20 inches long in the area's waters, which are filled with rainbow, brown and cutthroat trout.

Many areas of the river are for private use only, so anglers should watch for signs, but there are several stretches that are open to the public as well. Some of the more popular access points include:

  1. Meeker Town Park: Located in the center of town, anglers can fish the White River from the Circle Park Bridge at 4th and Water St. down to the 10th Street Bridge.
  2. Sleepy Cat Ponds: Open fishing is available 14.4 miles upriver from Meeker at the Sleepy Cat Ponds. The ponds are public as well as two miles of water surrounding them.
  3. Rio Blanco County: An area of water is open to fishing from the county campground to the county picnic area. To access the spot, take county road 8 24 miles upstream to county road 14. Take a right on 14 and travel about a mile to the county campground.
