The Colorado Trail runs from Denver to Durango, connecting 500 miles of Colorado, passing through eight mountain ranges, seven national forests, six wilderness areas and five river systems. The trail was a joint project between the US Forest Service and the Colorado Mountain Trails Foundation, originally began in 1973. The trail opened on September 4, 1987.

The trail is completely non-motorized, and divided into 28 segments where backpacking, hiking, bicycling and horse riding are popular. Dogs are not allowed on the first segment of the trail but are permitted everywhere else. The Colorado trail ranges in elevation from 6,000 feet to 13,334 feet, passing through the Arapaho, Roosevelt, Bighorn, Grand Mesa, Uncompahgre, Gunnison, Routt, Pike, San Isabel, San Juan/Rio Grande, White River, Black Hills, Shoshone and Nebraska National Forests. The completion of the trail takes an average of four to six weeks.
