Montrose is the gateway to the San Juan Skyway and the Ridgway State Recreation Area. The Montrose area offers some of the best fishing in Colorado on the Gunnison, San Miguel and Dolores rivers. Keep an eye out for the many golden eagles, red-tailed hawks, prairie falcons and great horned owls that live here. The Ridgway State Recreation Area provides boating, fishing, and swimming opportunities.

Ouray is a quiet little community wedged tightly into a portion of the Uncompahgre River Valley. Named for a Ute chief, Chief Ouray was responsible for keeping peace between the Europeans and Native Americans in the southwest region of Colorado. Later settled as a mining town in the 1870's, the area contained rich deposits of silver and produced over $20 million in gold. Tourism and mining still support the town today.

The North Fork Valley is a land rich in history of coal, fruit and cattle. The first settlers came to the North Fork Valley from Lake city in 1880. Soon Ira Quimbly Sanborn discovered coal in the Somerset area of the upper North Fork in 1899. Then, when the railroad came to the area in 1902, the railroad changed the commercial scale of the fruit industry. Today, the area is known for the worlds best apples, along with peaches, cherries, wine grapes, apricots and pears.
