Fort Collins - North Central Colorado
In the early 1800s, French fur trappers discovered the rich bounty of Northern Colorado. In the winter of 1836, a group of trappers buried gun powder next to a river for safe keeping until the following spring. So, they named the stream Cache La Poudre River (pronounced "Pooder") for the French words "hide" and "powder." Today, that beautiful river flows out of the mountains and runs through the middle of Fort Collins. Horsetooth Mountain Park, just a few miles west of the city, provides a mountain playground full of trails for hikers, bikers and horseback riders. Climb to the top of Horsetooth Rock for an expansive 360 degree view of the Front Range. There is always something to do in Fort Collins from the five local golf courses, several flea markets, shops and galleries to restaurants and pubs. Fort Collins is a growing city with a small-town feel, perfect for any getaway.
